As the very first donation post, I’m excited to feature a non-profit whose work resonates with what I’m looking to advance as I launch BecomingBetterPeople. The mission of StoryCorps is simple: “to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world.”
If there’s anything I’ve learned over the past few years, it’s that preaching one’s beliefs often falls on deaf ears. Or, it gets lost in an echo chamber. It’s way more effective, fun, and authentic to share personal stories that get to the core of who we are.
StoryCorps encourages the participation of anyone who wants to tell their story (including my mother-in-law, who shared her story at the first museum-sponsored Story Corps booth in the country). They seek to bridge divisions, share inspiration, and record memories while we’re able. They give voice to those who have too long felt their stories weren’t valued, and they seek to preserve history by capturing historic events and military service too. StoryCorps is both eager ear and vast archival repository.
I am delighted to support their work. Please check them out. Maybe you too will be inspired to donate, or share a story with them, or simply become captivated by the amazing range of stories available on their website.
