I can shout from the mountaintops until I’m blue in the face about how valuable and important it is to get out of our cultural bubbles. Since I want to make sure my words are also matched with action, I was thrilled to discover FLYTE when searching for a non-profit recipient that aligns with last week’s post.
Foundation for Learning and Youth Travel Education (FLYTE) empowers students in underserved communities through transformative travel experiences. They are all about engaging global citizenry, with the aim that students “learn for themselves that the world is so much bigger than the community from which you come.” Their mission is music to my ears, and resonates with the recent release of my new book, Let’s Leave the Country!, which encourages extended time abroad like we did as a family.
You may know of high schoolers with minimal resources, who might never step foot in another country— much less realize the value of doing so. Imagine how their lives and worldviews might be transformed with a single journey beyond familiar borders. Imagine how budding changemakers might be inspired to take the first steps into a future they otherwise couldn’t comprehend.
I am delighted to contribute to such a visionary cause, and hope you’ll also consider ways you can support world travel for under-resourced youth.
